Time Gone By

3/6/2021 - 5/12/2021

7/19/2024 - 10/18/2024

I began taking photos on this roll of film in 2021 immediately following my road trip around the USA, which I documented in Rolls 7-10. In that time I visited my grandparents and attended the graduation of my Virginia Tech friends. The following weekend I set off with my family on a trip to Yellowstone, The Grand Tetons, and the Rocky Mountains, for which I switched to a color film (Roll 11).

I resumed this roll when visiting my old home in Lilburn GA, and subsequently took photos of a beach trip to the Outer Banks with friends, football game day scenes in my beloved Blacksburg VA, and portions of my late Grandfather’s model train layout.

A common struggle across each roll of film I’ve shot has been people, or the lack thereof. I find people to be highly dynamic and difficult to capture, but more to the point, I have struggled to incorporate people in my photos that doesn’t feel contrived or forced, and also does not cause me to miss out on actually experiencing the moment. As a result, many of my photos feel somewhat impersonal and anonymous, and often are strangely/poorly framed to avoid having strangers in them. In the summer of 2020 regret forced me to push beyond my inhibitions and get photos of people I care about while I still can. It’s still a work in progress, but may be there will be a few more friendly faces in future photo albums.
